Next Week I Am Reading… Mrs Truran’s Half-Term Reading Suggestions

Friday 11 February 2022

With the half-term holiday upon us, we have swapped our weekly feature 'This Week I Am Reading...' for a compilation of recommended reads for each year group. Mrs Truran, our Librarian suggests the following engaging titles for you to enjoy during the break.

If you wish to purchase any of the books Mrs Truran recommends, you may like to order them from Bookshop.org by clicking here. This organisation provides a quick and easy way to order your chosen reads and also supports independent book stores.

For Years 7, 8 & 9

Orphans of the Tide: Eternity Engine by Struan Murray

Energetic and inventive with some startling surprises, this is also touching about friendship, siblings and loss and courage. Nicolette Jones - Sunday Times Book of the Week

I absolutely love this series. Struan has such an imaginative voice. A book full of action and adventure with a good dose of compassion.

The Revelry by Katherine Webber

Katherine Webber is one of my top YA authors. She absolutely hits the mark with her characters and plot. A great read. Maybe more suited to Year 8 and 9.

Wolf Light by Yaba Badoe

Yaba Badoe is a new author to me. She brings the tropical forests of her home country, Ghana, to the stormy moors of Cornwall. Magic, intrigue and friendship. A challenging read but a very worthwhile one.

For Years 10-13

Solstice of Death by Laurence Anholt

Just one suggestion here as I know that our pupils in exam years will be busy revising over the holiday. Book number 3 in the series is set in Stonehenge, where we find the quirky pair investigating another murder. Light but full of interesting facts about Stonehenge and the solstice. Great fun.
Mrs T

Leading the investigation into this peculiar death is DI Shanti Joyce and her partner, Vincent Caine. To Shanti's chagrin the pair have become known as 'the go-to team for weird stuff in the West Country' and this festive fatality is the mother and Father Christmas of odd and ritualistic crimes. For Parents, Guardians, and Staff

Snow by John Banville

Following the discovery of the corpse of a highly respected parish priest at Ballyglass House - the Co. Wexford family seat of the aristocratic, secretive Osborne family - Detective Inspector St John Strafford is called in from Dublin to investigate.

Strafford faces obstruction from all angles, but carries on determinedly in his pursuit of the murderer. However, as the snow continues to fall over this ever-expanding mystery, the people of Ballyglass are equally determined to keep their secrets’. Waterstones

This is a really classy detective series. I have a liking for Irish novels and really enjoyed this one. Glad to hear the next book in the series is now published.

The Windsor Knot by Sophia Bennett

A highly amusing tale of the Queen turning detective. Clever, funny and full of ‘royal observations’. This book made me laugh out loud and that is rare for me!

This version of Her Majesty - shrewd, sensible and inquisitive - has much in common with Alan Bennett's royal creation in The Uncommon Reader, and the resulting book, with its mixture of real and imagined characters, is charming, cosy and respectful. ― The Guardian
