Seminar: Careers With Maths

Friday 9 February 2024

STEPHEN PAINE, HEAD OF MATHEMATICS

During lunchtime on Thursday 8 February, students in Years 10-13 were invited to a webinar by the Advanced Mathematics Support Programme on the career paths that qualifications in Mathematics can lead to.

The aims of the talks were:

  • to give students the opportunity to learn from employers about work, employment and the skills that are valued in the workplace;
  • to help students link curriculum learning with careers.

The three speakers gave an account of the paths they took to their current roles:

  • Chloe – on a degree apprenticeship as an Aerospace Engineer with Rolls Royce
  • Brindah - on an Assurance degree apprenticeship with EY to become a Chartered Accountant
  • Jake – a Project Management apprentice with Aviva

Of particular interest was the talk by Chloe. She spoke of her involvement in developing jet powered engines for both commercial use in aircrafts and for the MOD contributing to engines for the Red Arrows.

The students left with an appreciation of the opportunities that a pathway in STEM, and particularly mathematics, can lead to.
