OQ Becky Addresses Queenswood Medical Society

Friday 10 November 2023

The Medical Society has had an exciting week this week with two fantastic guest speakers.

Our first guest was Becky Walter, an OQ and third year student of Veterinary Medicine. Becky talked to the potential medics and vets from Years 10 to 13 about her experiences as a Vetmed student.

She gave some detailed information and advice about preparing for a veterinary or medical application emphasising the importance of work experience and additional reading. Becky shared her experiences of the multiple mini interviews (MMIs) that many universities use for selection to vet school, and also some stories from her amazing clinical placements, on of which brought her to Whipsnade zoo to rasp the teeth of a rhino!

This was followed by a talk about neurological disorders from Alison Hepworth, a Clinical Nurse Specialist who helps patients with Parkinson’s disease manage their symptoms. Alison shared her journey from training and her early career roles that led her to her current specialism. We were able to see the incredible advance made in the treatment of Parkinson’s using deep brain stimulation and students were able to make links here to the possible treatment of other neurological diseases. The students were able to hear how rewarding and varied the role of a Clinical Nurse Specialist is and the difference this work can make to peoples lives.

The medical society would like to thank our guests. We are always keen to make links with people in medicine and the allied health services so please do get in touch with Miss Smith at [email protected] if you work in a relevant field and would like to get involved.
