Go Red for Dyslexia: Queenswood celebrates Dyslexia Awareness Week

Thursday 5 October 2023

This week at Queenswood we have been celebrating Dyslexia Awareness Week and this year's theme, 'Uniquely You'. Dyslexia is a neurological difference and can have a significant impact during education, in the workplace and in everyday life. As each person is unique, so is everyone's experience of dyslexia. It can range from mild to severe, and it can co-occur with other specific learning difficulties. It usually runs in families and is a life-long condition.

Throughout the week, students in the Personalised Learning Centre have been taking their thumbprints in red ink and examining how each of their prints are unique, just like their own experience of dyslexia. Supporting the Go Red for Dyslexia campaign, the pupils used red ink as this is the colour often associated with spelling mistakes and failing marks. The students then used their artistic skills to turn their thumbprints into the most interesting and individual designs.

It was wonderful to see so many pupils and staff take part in the dyslexia awareness activities in the Personalised Learning Centre and you can see a collage of images captured throughout the week below. There is also a most enlightening video which demonstrates what it is like to be dyslexic.
