Weekend Fun: Plan Ahead for 2021

Thursday 18 March 2021

With restrictions on social contact due to ease over the coming weeks and months, we can all tentatively look forward to some spring and summer fun. Now that the roadmap out of lockdown has been published, many venues are announcing their opening dates and advertising details for all types of events. The booking frenzy is beginning! Why not spend some time this weekend planning ahead to make the most of your school holidays and weekends.

Here are some suggestions you may like to consider.

See a West-End Show

Everybody's Talking About Jamie reopens at the Apollo Theatre on 20 May. Inspired by true events, this award winning show tells the story of Jamie New, who supported by his loving mum and surrounded by his friends overcomes prejudice and steps into the spotlight. The ticketing systems operates with an algorithm to ensure that when you pick your seats, social distancing rules are maintained in the auditorium.

Other productions scheduled to open in 2021 include Andrew Lloyd Webber's new musical comedy Cinderella, Hairspray and Singin' in the Rain.

Take a Picnic to a Historic House or Arboretum

The National Trust plan to open their indoor attractions from 17 May, if government guidance allows. Cafés are currently takeaway only but they aim to offer outdoor seating from 12 April and inside seating from 17 May. Ticket numbers will be limited to maintain social distancing and allocated arrival times will make entry to venues less congested. Early booking is advisable. You can book tickets here.

Similarly, English Heritage are already taking bookings for visits to over 60 historic sites between 29 March and 16 May. Further sites will open in phases throughout the summer. Find out which sites will open and how to book your visit here.

Explore a Gallery

Many galleries offered stunning virtual tours during lockdown, but from 17 May you will be able to visit in person again.

The Tate Modern opens with a rare chance to experience two of Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama's stunning 'infinity rooms'. Infinity Mirrored Room – Filled with the Brilliance of Life is one of Kusama’s largest installations to date and was made for her 2012 retrospective at Tate Modern. It is shown alongside Chandelier of Grief, a room which creates the illusion of a boundless universe of rotating crystal chandeliers.  The exhibition's booking information will be announced soon; entry is free for Tate members.

For a truly breathtaking experience later in the year, the Van Gogh Immersive Experience is one not to miss! Combining exquisite storytelling and cutting-edge technology, this covid-safe and family-friendly immersive experience is a perfect outing for all ages. Book now for October half term.

Visit Shakespeare's Globe Theatre

Shakespeare’s Globe is planning to reopen to visitors on April 13. Initially, the theatre is just running socially-distanced guided tours of the building and backstage areas, but they are hopeful that performances may commence from May 17. The theatre’s Swan restaurant and bar will reopen on April 12 for outdoor dining and drinking.

If you are too busy studying for exams to visit London, you may be interested in booking one of the theatre's GCSE or A-Level virtual revision workshops.
