Modern Foreign Languages

'Those who know nothing of foreign languages, know nothing of their own' – Goethe

Our main aim is to inspire a life-long love of languages. All Year 7 girls study French and girls then choose Spanish or Japanese as a second language in Year 8. The majority of girls study French to GCSE and around two thirds take on a second foreign language – Spanish, Italian or Japanese. In addition to French, Spanish, Japanese and Italian are currently offered at GCSE and A-Level. We are lucky enough to have native-speaking teaching staff who provide invaluable help to the girls in preparation for their oral examinations.

The Department maintains strong links with former Queenswood girls who are currently studying languages at Oxford and Cambridge University. In addition to this, the Japanese Department has received the prestigious Good Schools Guide Award for excellence.

Work experience and cultural visits form an integral part of the Department’s work. Recent trips include a visit to Japan, a cultural mini-break to Paris, work experience in southern Spain and an Italian study trip to the Amalfi Coast.
