In his spare time, Mr Dobson, Queenswood’s Director of Music, has been restoring an astonishingly beautiful keyboard instrument.

The replica virginal, a precursor to the harpsichord and a copy of the instrument that was owned and played by Elizabeth I, was purchased for £30, just hours before it was due to be dumped in a skip.

Over many weeks, Mr Dobson has restrung, renovated and fine-tuned the virginal, and in this video he demonstrates its deeply evocative sound.
