Beach Clean Up Day at Kingsgate Bay

MISS YAFFE, TREW HOUSEMISTRESS
36 Year 12 students ventured to Kingsgate Bay beach for their Community Action Day, during Enrichment week.
The students partnered up with the Marine Conservation Society to complete a beach clean and survey their findings. Thanet Council kindly loaned us over 40 litter pickers, rubbish bags, rubbish hoops, a weighing scale and tape measure!
When we arrived, we measured two sections of 100 metres to survey. The students worked in teams to collect the rubbish whilst taking in the beautiful scenery!
They emptied the rubbish they collected and sorted into different material, to capture what was being washed up on the beach. The students found crisp packets, cans, cups, dog poo bags, balloons, plastic bags and scrap metal including two single use BBQs. They students completed their surveys, which will be sent to the Marine Conservation Society.
Once the students had completed their community action day, there was plenty of time to play footie, enjoy the sun and explore the beach. We all had a brilliant time and we hope the students will be more mindful about the environmental issues of rubbish in the ocean and that they continue to pick up rubbish they see on the beach and surrounding area.
