Friday 23 May 2025
Many congratulations to Yui H (Year 8), who has won a commendation in the Anthea Bell Prize for Young Translators run by Queen’s College, Oxford.
Students were tasked with translating a challenging passage from either French, German, Italian, Mandarin, Russian or Spanish into English. Yui’s entry, translated from Spanish, was one of more than 22,000 submissions, so it is a fabulous achievement to have received this prestigious commendation.

The Pirates
To hammer the last nail in the harness.
To hammer the last nail in the fine sonorous plank.
It’s time to leave, good pirates,
It’s time to test the breath of the wind.
Below the keel, Triton’s neck bends down,
And the vivid light of thunder gilds the chimera of bronze set in the prow,
And a smile spreads on the lips of the axe.
A song of piracy to greet the true flag of the day
When a new bugler of dawn must play
To praise the knight of the wind
Who stains the blue silk sky
With the red banner of the King of the sea!
