Queenswood is an extraordinary place with extraordinary people. It would be our privilege to educate your daughters here.

This Week I Am Reading… Jayne Truran, Queenswood Librarian

Friday 9 October 2020

Mrs Jayne Truran joined Queenswood five years ago as Librarian. In addition to her love of reading, she enjoys knitting, visiting galleries and going to the theatre. Mrs Truran takes great pleasure in hosting visting authors at School, events which our girls engage with enthusiastically. During the current restrictions, she is organising virtual author presentations and continues to encourage our pupils to read for pleasure.

The Governess  Wendy Holden

Part fact and part fiction, this historical novel follows the journey of Marion Crawford (Crawfie) from trainee teacher to royal governess. Despite being resolved to work with children in the slums of London, by a curious set of circumstances Marion finds herself as governess to the young Princess Elizabeth and her sister Princess Margaret Rose.

She is determined to take a modern approach to education for the young royals and to show them what real life outside of the palace is like. Together they embark on a series of adventures, travelling on the tube, visiting Woolworths, art galleries and museums and swimming in the local public baths.

Set alongside the royal story is a tale of peril, poverty, danger and ultimately betrayal. Heart-breaking at times, it offers a real insight into life inside the royal circle. There is great attention to detail throughout. I particularly enjoyed the fashion aspect and the friendship between Norman Hartnell, the leading British fashion designer and Marion. An enjoyable and well-researched read.
