Aberdare Cup victory secures World Finals place for Queenswood’s tennis stars

Monday 16 July 2018

Queenswood’s Tennis Scholars are celebrating another famous victory in the Aberdare Cup.

It’s the sixth time in eight years that our elite players have won this prestigious National Girls’ Schools Competition, and as a result we have qualified yet again for the World Schools Tennis Championships, to be held in Rome in 2019.

Once more we faced Dorset’s Talbot Heath School in the final, having beaten some very stiff competition from Wilmslow High, South Hunsley and Culford in previous rounds.

The final proved extremely close, with the two schools inseparable right up to the deciding tie-break shoot-out. The doubles pairing of Issey Purser and Given Roach showed tremendous resilience and spirit to break the deadlock, and book Queenswood’s place at Worlds for the third time since 2013.

Many congratulations to all players in both the A and B teams, many of whom are very young for their age. The future of Queenswood tennis lloks very bright indeed!
