Diane MacLean – A Royal Gift to Paris

Thursday 26 June 2014

On 7th June 2014 OQ Diane MacLean’s sculpture ‘Open Book’ was unveiled by Her Majesty The Queen, assisted by President Hollande, in the Place Lepine, Ile de la Cite, Paris. It was the final event in the Queen’s state visit to France and the sculpture was donated by Her Majesty to the people of Paris. An engraved plaque beside the sculpture bears the words: “An open book we are writing together” “Un livre ouvert que nous ecrivons ensemble”. The sculpture will be permanently sited at a later date in a garden near the Champs-Élysées.

Diane’s maiden name was Barlow, and she was one of 4 sisters who attended Queenswood. Diane was commissioned by Miss Essame to design a sculpture for the school shortly after the ABC was built and she came up with the idea of the stunning mobile that hangs in the Atrium there. Since then Diane has designed many imaginative works for exhibitions and commissions not only all over the UK but in Europe and the rest of the world.
