Christina’s Beautiful Composition Scoops Prestigious NLMF Prize

Wednesday 12 May 2021

CHRISTINA C
Winner of 3rd Prize with Distinction
North London Music Festival
Composition Section, 16–18 years category

Christina composed this delightful piece for solo piano, titled ‘Beyond The Sky’, as part of her GCSE Music coursework portfolio. Along with two of her GCSE Music classmates, she decided to enter the prestigious North London Music Festival (NLMF) competition following the encouragement and guidance of Mr Kokkinos, our Assistant Director of Music, who also teaches composition for GCSE and A-level.

NLMF is a very popular, well established and highly regarded music festival that runs annually and attracts the very best young musicians from Greater London and the Home Counties to compete in their chosen music disciplines, including composition. You can find out more about the NLMF here.

Christina remarked after receiving the news of her award:

"I am very happy and honoured to be able to win this award because I never thought I would get it."

The adjudicator, Dr Timothy Bowers, commented:

"‘Beyond The Sky’ is an attractive piano piece…..The accompaniment has a distinctive rhythmic and melodic character of its own…The occasional changes of register work well….The melody is distinctive and memorable."

Mr Kokkinos, Assistant Director of Music at Queenswood, was thrilled for Christina:

“‘Beyond The Sky’ is a very characterful and highly idiomatic piece for solo piano, and its title captures the emotive musical storytelling. Left and right hand melodic lines and harmony complement each other in a very fluid manner and take the listener on a musical journey.

Christina’s success in the festival is even more poignant for the fact that she managed to create all this while learning and studying remotely – she completed her composition, performance and recording on her own at home with remote guidance. This is a great accolade and shows Christina’s strength and resilience as an independent learner. Well done!”
