We are constantly looking at improving ways in which our Sixth Form students can maximise their leadership potential and the current system operates as follows.
The Lower Sixth students have an induction session at the start of term. Participation in team building and problem solving tasks is followed by an informal meal with Sixth Form staff to end the day.
The experience gained at the induction can be used throughout the year as the girls take on the organisation of various events and activities.
Upper Sixth students are promoted to the status of School Leaders. In recognition of their seniority, they all receive the gift of a silver Q brooch. Leading the whole team are the Head Girl and her Deputies, who have been elected by their peers and the staff. All School Leaders share major responsibilities within the school. In addition, they opt for a role in a special area of interest such as drama, music, sport, environment, library, debating, charities, Amnesty etc. The girls are also asked to take the initiative and set up their own group / committee involving students from lower years.
Employers are increasingly impressed by candidates who show a high level of competency in teamwork and leadership and who have well-developed interpersonal, motivational and organisational skills. We feel this system provides all girls with a great opportunity to develop these important life skills.
Community Action
In the Lower Sixth, girls take part in Community Action. This develops their communication skills through contact with people of differing ages, abilities and backgrounds. The programme runs from September to April and involves working with young children, older people and children and adults with learning difficulties. The Lower Sixth also hosts three events: a Christingle Service in December, a Strawberry Tea for 100 older people in July and a special concert in July with Lakeside School.
