Sally Kettle - Sixth Form Lecture

Within ten seconds of starting her talk Sally had the audience captivated. We were all hanging on to her every word as Sally’s remarkable story of how she rowed across the Atlantic Ocean (twice!) unfolded. We experienced the whole gamut of emotions - joy, sadness, disappointment, relief, fear, incredulity - but mainly we were in fits of giggles at the Sally’s hair-raising anecdotes.
Sally is a truly inspirational person – and a superb speaker. Her presentation was delivered with great energy and humour. She is a graduate of the University of Brighton where she studied Theatre and Visual Practice. As part of her degree she made a dress out of tumble drier lint sewn together with her own hair after a six week sit-in in a launderette! She had no rowing experience when she first took to the ocean in 2003. In January 2004 she and her mother, Sarah, also a rowing novice, set off from the Canary Islands to cross the Atlantic in a 27 foot wooden boat. They faced 50 foot waves, whales and oil tankers but made it to their destination in 105 days! They became the world’s first mother and daughter team to row across the Atlantic. Then two years later, as part of a team of four, she did it again…

Without doubt she is certainly a wonderful role model for all of us. I know I can’t wait for the next time this delightful young lady returns to Queenswood!
