National Science Week 2009 ran from March 6th to 15th, although at Q we enjoy it so much that we extended it by two days!
Our activities began with a ground breaking live web cast with the energy maestro Rob Farr. Four year 9 sets watched the web cast in their classrooms as Rob explained the problems that may lie ahead with energy shortages and the search for alternative fuels. Many thanks to IT support for standing by to see that all went according to plan.
On Tuesday 10 three teams of Queenswood girls from Years 10,11 and Lower 6th participated in a Science and Technology Challenge at Oaklands College Welwyn Garden City, where they had to build working rocket launchers. Congratulations must go, in particular, to the Year 11 team who came second in their task - beaten to first place by a single point. |

During the week the Science leaders organised mini science investigations including ‘Can you really taste the difference between Coke and Pepsi? The analysis of the results will be published on the intranet soon.
During lessons the Science staff added an extra buzz of excitement by demonstrating some of the greatest ‘Whizz Bang Experiments’ of all time. The two favourites were the Whoosh bottle - who would have thought that an empty water bottle could be so exciting? - and flaming hands (let me assure you that no Science teachers were harmed during the performance of these experiments BUT don’t try these at home!)
The final event was an illustrated lecture given by Olympic high jumper and entrepreneur Geoff Parsons. The Sixth Form and Year 11 were fascinated to hear ‘an insider’s view of Beijing 2008’ and Geoff included many references to the important part that Science and Technology can play in the final performance of the athletes. A fitting end to an eventful Science Week 2009. |
