Twelve girls in years 8-10 took part in the preliminary rounds of the Food Direct from the Farm Schools Food Challenge in Peterborough on Friday 18 April.  This competition is comparable with a junior version of Master Chef, celebrating British food and the pupil’s culinary skills.  Our girls were entered for the competition and mentored by Mr Jon Welch, Head of Design Technology. The Queenswood ‘chefs’ worked in three teams in an industrial kitchen and competed against over 55 teams from the East of England Region.

The competition is run in partnership with the Prince’s Trust, the Academy of Culinary Arts and the East of England Agricultural Society and the teams had an hour to prepare and cook: ‘A typical English meal for an overseas visitor’. The menu comprised a main course and dessert for one person and our girls presented a range of meals from their chosen ingredients including trout, pork and Shepherd’s Pie and strawberries, raspberries and Apple Charlotte.  “Although this competition has been running for 13 years, it is the first time we have entered” said Mr Welch “and the girls really enjoyed the challenge.”

The teams await the judges’ selection of four finalists from all the competing teams who will go through to the Grand Final at the East of England Show on Friday 13th June 2008.  Bon appétit!
