The house system is designed to assist each individuals development and all girls are members of a boarding house in the care of an experienced, well qualified teaching housemistress. The housemistresses never assume to replace parents but an integrated pastoral partnership develops between school and home; as a family, you will be invited to many events and activities. Day girls are fully integrated into the house system.
Many families prefer our flexible system of boarding as it suits their needs. Our boarders come from miles away, very locally and overseas. Some girls start Queenswood as day girls and move to boarding when they and their families are ready. This change can take place at any time but many girls find it useful as they concentrate on public examinations and as a preparation for university.
Through our wealth of experience we know that girls need to feel happy, secure and valued. Your daughter will be made to feel at home and she will undoubtedly make life long friendships from the boarding experience. An active and varied programme ensures that boarders are always busy and we value the contribution that boarders make to the life of the school. Our international boarders learn about and adapt to our traditions and help to broaden the horizons of our more local girls as they share with us various aspects of their cultures. We encourage this mutual learning.
The facilities for the boarders are comfortable, well maintained, safe, clean and inviting. We have a continuous programme of refurbishment throughout the school and we involve the girls and staff in decor choices. Bedroom sizes vary with single and shared bedrooms in most houses. Girls move bedrooms each term so enabling them to get to know as many girls as possible in their year group and sampling the different accommodation in the house.
If you are considering boarding and would like to know more, the Boarding Schools Association (BSA) website is full of helpful information - see the Quick Link on the left. In particular, two publications which can be obtained from the BSA are highly recommended: 'Parenting the Boarder' by Libby Purves and 'Being a Boarder' by Ms Purves's daughter, Rose Heiney.
Day girls can sleepover on occasions and can transfer to boarding if space permits. Sixth Formers come back together as a year group giving them more autonomy and greater freedom - the perfect preparation for university.
