Our Year 8 Tennis Team of Nicole S, Becky S, Lindsay Y, Chloe L and Katarina W were outstanding winners of the 2009 National Schools Championships held at the Bolton Arena last weekend.

Over 2,000 schools have taken part in this competition, starting last May with local, county and regional rounds leading to the National Finals. The Queenswood team beat Ellesmere College 6-0 and Sheffield High School 5-1 on the first day and then played Red Maids’ School, Bristol on the Sunday.  Red Maids’ had also won both matches on the Saturday making this match the decider. Queenswood’s court was decorated with banners the girls had produced to support the team.

The second doubles pair of Chloe and Lindsay was the first match on and a tense battle ensued with the match being decided by a tie-break at 6-6.  Match points were lost by both sides before the Q team came through to win 9-7.

Sam Bruce, the Gosling coach, was working hard at this point as the teams are allowed to have the coach on court and they can speak to the players at the change of ends in the match.  Loud vocal support was being given by the rest of the team and from the parents (Mr and Mrs L and Mr W) who had travelled all the way to Bolton.

The next doubles match was equally tense with our pair of Nicole and Becky taking it 6-4.  The vocal support at this point was even louder - the rest of the Arena knew Queenswood were here! This gave us a 2-0 lead going into the singles with our No. 4, Chloe, winning another tense fight 7-5 with match points against her saved.

Now we had a 3-0 lead and Lindsay took command of her match to win 6-1 and ensure victory for the team.  Our No. 1 and No. 2 players, Nicole and Becky, then completed their matches knowing they were National Champions, finally taking the match 5-1.

Throughout the weekend the girls worked brilliantly as a team both on and off court showing excellent spirit and they have been rewarded for all the hard work they have put in as NATIONAL CHAMPIONS.
