History is a
popular subject at Queenswood. The
department aims to encourage the girls’ curiosity about the past and to
emphasise the relevance of the subject for understanding more about
ourselves
and the world in which we live.
A rich and
stimulating curriculum is supported by many opportunities for study beyond the
classroom. Lessons adopt a range
of teaching techniques to develop students’ thinking, such as role-play, group
work and debate. In Years 7-9
girls visit Rochester Cathedral and Castle, Hampton Court Palace and the
Imperial War Museum. Biennial
study trips to Russia and America are offered to girls in Year 10 and above to
enrich their examination courses.
The Department will be leading a trip to Alabama at Easter 2011.
The Edexcel
GCSE in Modern World History enables a broad understanding to be gained of the
twentieth century, with a particular focus on revolution and dictatorship in
the USSR and the American Civil Rights movement. At A Level girls develop their understanding of power and
protest through a study of 19th and 20th century America
and Tudor England. Further
information about the A Level syllabus can be found by following the link at the bottom of the page.
Many girls
are inspired to continue their study of History and related subjects at
university.
