Field trip to Iceland
Geography at Queenswood is exciting and looks beyond the classroom, with fieldwork forming a key part of the curriculum. In Years 7-10 this consists of day visits to local venues, with the Sixth Form travelling further afield to the South coast and North Wales. Optional overseas visits have included a joint study venture with the Spanish department to Costa Rica and regular trips to Iceland. A Level courses build on areas studied at GCSE such as plate tectonics, rivers, coasts, settlement and population. Additional and more complex topics such as glaciation and development are also considered.

Having had a taste of the diversity and excitement of the subject at Queenswood, many girls go on to study Geography and related disciplines at university.

Helen Hoyle , Head of Geography

Miss Helen Hoyle, BA Hons. Geography (Oxon)

After four years as Head of Geography at Forest School, Helen moved to Queenswood as Head of Geography in 2000. She soon updated the departments fieldwork provision, particularly through the introduction of an optional overseas trip to Iceland, which first took place in 2001.

In the same year Helen gained her Mountain Leadership Award and was appointed coordinator of outdoor activities at Queenswood.  She relaunched the Schools Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme in 2002.

Until this point she had been involved in examination, working as an A Level team leader for Edexcel. In June 2006 Helen was appointed coordinator of Gifted and Talented pupils at Queenswood. She is currently an active member of Barnet and District Athletic Club, and is taking part in UCL Hospital's Extreme Everest Medical Research Expedition in Spring 2007.
