Young Enterprise
Economics and Business Studies are both popular Sixth Form subjects. They provide an opportunity for girls to study a discipline not encountered lower down the school; both are seen as being 'connected' to the real world.

The fact that economic and business issues are always in the news provides ample opportunity to use topical events in support of theory. Classroom teaching is supplemented by attendance at study and revision days run by Principal Examiners and by trips to places such as New York and the Coca Cola factory in Edmonton. Participation in the Young Enterprise scheme enables the girls to gain first hand experience of the challenges of business; the fact that this scheme is supported by adult advisors from industry exposes the girls to a broader view of the economy.

Sian Challacombe, Head of Economics and Business Studies

Miss Sian Challacombe, MA Hons Economics (Edinburgh), PGCE

Having completed her PGCE at Warwick in 2003, Queenswood is Sian's first teaching post.  Since 2005, Sian has taken on a number of responsibilities, including Head of Economics and Business Studies. Sian is in charge of the Young Enterprise scheme and assists two groups of Lower Sixth girls run their Young Enterprise businesses.

Heavily involved in the school's outdoor education programme, Sian runs a cross country club, is an Award Leader for the Duke of Edinburgh programme and organises an annual activity trip for the Lower School. Her passion for the outdoors goes beyond school: while at university she held a sabbatical post as the Sports Union President and was in charge of all university sport.

Sian was appointed to represent Scottish Universities and sat on the Executive Board of BUSA (British Universities Sports Association). Currently she is the Lead Coach of the Great Britain U18 Orienteering Squad, coaching international athletes during the school holidays and leading expeditions.  Sian also competes herself and is proud to have represented both Wales and Great Britain.
