Historians in Washington

Monday 28 April 2014

The trip to Washington DC in April 2014 involved nine girls from the Lower Sixth and four girls from the Upper Sixth. The trip was planned
carefully ensuring that the girls had a maximum range of opportunities,
which included entrance into the Supreme Court, Senate, the House of
Representatives, the Pentagon, Arlington Cemetery
and the White House Centre.  Additionally, the girls were able to watch a
basketball match where the Washington Wizards beat
the Boston Celtics.  Evening meals were varied, ranging from Italian to
traditional American.

A guided tour was arranged
which included a walk round Washington with clear and vivid explanations of the city’s historical buildings, including the
Lincoln Memorial and the Washington Monument.  The tour was invaluable
as it enabled the girls to make strong links between
the politics of Washington, the Civil Rights Movement and societal
changes that have taken place over the last two centuries.

Finally, a
well deserved shopping trip was saved for the last day, where all the
girls were able to frantically spend their money
in George Town. The History Department were delighted to be able to lay
on a trip which enhanced students’ understanding of the A level
course and provided much enrichment.
