5-a-Side Football Mid-Herts Champions

Monday 30 September 2013
Queenswood School once again took part in theMid Herts District Five aside tournament – having won it convincingly last year.
However, we could see that the standard of football was far higher in 2013, and
it was clear there was going to be no repeat of the steamrolling wins of last
year.

Queenswood’s first game was a tight affair – time again, Amy
Lynn, in the Queenswood goal, denied the opposition striker when through
one-on-one. The defensive trio of Fifi Ayo, Gina Liggins and Cartier Finnis
battled against a slick passing, quick moving Mount Grace side, whilst Naomi
Coulson and the Bedi sisters – Rhianna and Shania – tried to fashion any
opportunity to score. Time was ticking away when, finally, the Bedis combined
beautifully down the right and Rhianna hammered the ball past a despairing
goalkeeper for a morale-boosting 1-0 victory.

The second game, against an extremely strong Hertswood side,
began badly with Queenswood being one nil down after 5 seconds. Although Q
quickly equalised through a sweet strike to the corner from Naomi, the game
drifted away from us with Hertswood going 3-1 up with just 5 minutes to play.

But we were not to be daunted.

With Fifi crashing into any striker that dared come into our
half, Cartier and Amy linking up to provide a dependable wall at the back and
Gina – literally – throwing her body to the floor in determination to not
concede again, we took back control. With some excellent long range striking
from Shania, Rhianna and Naomi, Queenswood somehow sneaked ahead just before
the full time whistle, to win 4-3.

The last game was, unfortunately, something of anti-climax
following the tension of the second – with Q romping to a convincing 4-0
victory. The key moment, though, was super sub Cesca Polledri swooping through
on goal, steadying herself and slotting the ball home into the far corner.
Without doubt, the goal of the tournament.

The team would like to thank Miss Gerke and Mrs Brown for
accompanying us and offering great support, and hope this is the first of many
football victories at Queenswood this year. We have several tournaments coming
up, including a National 7 Aside, so if any girls are interested in taking
part, please contact Rhianna Bedi or Naomi Coulson.
